Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
Hi Katherine,
Since I was a child I have always considered sunflowers to be "plant
people" when they grow in my garden. They're always large and have big
shoulders with smiling faces. It isn't so much that they GROW there but
rather more that they DWELL there.
As your sunflowers will grow large you could grow them along the
northern perimeter of your garden, where they won't shade any smaller
flowers with their size, or you can grow them in a row of their own,
which is always nice. A row of sunflowers is will become an instant
hedge, it will provide you with some temporary screening. Wherever you
grow them do take advantage of that their "feet" will soon be in the
shade of their own leaf canopy. Use this space to try growing some cool
season veggies, like lettuces and spinach. You could also "pretty them
up" with some morning glories. Morning glories are real easy to grow
too, just pop the seeds into the soil and they come up with a little
rain and then some sunshine. Ideally you could sow the seeds for both
the sunflowers and the morning glories at the same time, the sunflowers
germinate very quickly and will be up in just a few short days, the
morning glories will be up about a week later and they'll have the
sunflowers right there to start climbing on when they both get big enough.
