I love sunflowers :)  This year instead of Russian Mammoth I am growing
teddy bear sunflowers.  they will be used along the edge of my garden.   I
am also going to be naughty and throw out some black oil sunflower seeds for
the birds and maybe a small stand out side the fence.  May regret it later
but my rabbits love those seeds and really enjoy munching the seed heads
also.
Tall as my Russian mammoth were they never seemed to make that dense a
shade,  just kept the area a little cooler   they might keep your peas going
a little longer as for the tomatoes and watermelon it depends on your
climate.  Here any shade or form of cooling is not something we want for
those heat lovers
