Hey folks. . .
I recently had six 8' x 8' raised beds built from railroad ties for purposes
of growing a lot of chile peppers in my (rather small) backyard. The boxes
were made before I ran across any Square Foot Gardening info. I understand
that classic SFG consists of using boxes that are 'no wider than 4 feet'.
I'm wondering if I can still successfully use the SFG approach if I divide
each 8' box up into four 4' x 4' boxes, with a wide plank running vertically
and horizontally down the middle of each 8' x 8' bed, so I won't ever be
walking directly on the soil.
The layout would look something like this:
[P][P][P] [] [P][P][P]
[P][P][P] [] [P][P][P]
[P][P][P] [] [P][P][P]
===========
[P][P][P] [] [P][P][P]
[P][P][P] [] [P][P][P]
[P][P][P] [] [P][P][P]
Is there anyone else on the list who has attempted growing peppers this same
way? What have your experiences been? Any warnings/advice you'd be willing
to offer? I'm about 16 miles off the coast of Maine (Zone 6) where our
growing season isn't optimal for peppers, so I'm also considering putting a
layer of black plastic across the top of the soil to keep the soil and
plants warm as much as possible. Am I up against any potential nightmares
that I will probably regret later?
Any/all feedback greatly appreciated.
John
