John, you sound like you're worrying unnecessarily about duplicating 
"classic SFG".  There is nothing sacred about the four foot width; it is 
just the average for what most people can reach comfortably across.  I have 
beds and rows that are less and more.  In fact, with a few carefully placed 
stepping stones you could just keep your bed 8 by 8.  There is nothing 
wrong with your two 3 by 3s.  You could even just have one plank down the 
middle and have two 8 by 3s.  That's probably the most efficient.

That's a hell of a lot of chile peppers my friend!  Not growing anything 
else?  Chiles are nice to "tuck" into square foot openings.
