Re: seedling question
I guess I'll have to chime in here. I think the minimum night temps for
setting seedlings out is 45, not 55. The original post said neither her
tomatoes nor peppers had true leaves yet. It's been my experience that
transplanting seedlings with only primary leaves results in the death of
the seedling. Yes, she should have started them under lights. Gardening is
a learning experience. If she wants to grow a special variety this year and
can't buy seedlings, she can direct seed in the ground when the soil is
warmer. That's a lot faster than starting plants inside the house. The
problem with transplanting cucumbers is they don't like their roots
disturbed, so be very careful about the roots when you set them out. They
may be transplanted, but keep an eye on them. Keep them covered the first
day with a flower pot or something, then uncover late afternoon. Late the
next morning, if cucumbers are wilting, cover them through the heat of the
