I may have learned this trick from someone here on the list, but I
thought I'd mention that I've finally found an acceptable deterrant
for bugs (esp. pillbugs and ants), birds, and rabbits eating my
strawberries: cayenne pepper! (this is apparently used to deter
lots of pests, both big and small, from doing things they shouldn't)
A couple of weeks ago I sprinkled my strawberry bed liberally with
cayenne pepper to protect my nice, big, ripening strawberries.
Although I have lost a few since then, I have noticed a distinct
reduction in fruit loss since then. Boy, am I happy......especially
since I discovered that I now have a family of rabbits, from tiny
baby to large mama, living in my backyard garden. I live in a city!!
Admittedly, there is a nice greenbelt across the street, but I wish
they'd go over and live near the nice wildflowers and weeds and
pretty stream with tall trees instead of nibbling on my nice, fresh
lettuce! }:(
