<< Does anyone have any suggestions for keeping the soil more
moist while waiting for the seeds to sprout? Carrots in
particular have been a big problem for me, last year not a
single one germinated!! >>
Prepare the area for the carrots, then water the soil very heavily, till well
soaked. Seed the carrots on top of the wet soil, then cover with a fine
layer of vermiculite or very fine screened compost. Water with a mister till
the top layer is wet. Cover with a floating row cover (no hoops necessary)
an old bedsheet or some fine thin curtain fabric etc, checking under it each
day until the carrots have germinated. Mist with a spray bottle if the top
layer is drying out. This worked for me when about nothing else would. I
like to mix a cheap pak of radish in with the carrot seed, it comes up before
the carrots and keeps the ground open for them, marks the area for you and
lifts up the cover or curtain material off the thin little carrot seedlings.
The radishes are pulled out about the time you are thinning the carrots. I
dont like radishes much (very thin sliced in salad is OK) but our bunny likes
them a lot. Isnt that odd for a rabbit to like them?
