In a message dated 97-05-17 17:11:08 EDT, you write:
<< Doesn't sound good. Beets are cool season veggies, producing their best
roots
before the temperatures get too warm. You can sow seeds directly in the
garden as soon as you can work the soil in the spring, so go ahead and
resow,
it's not too late.
Good luck

Could this be a boron deficiency? I know beets need it, but dont know if it
affects the roots, leaves or both. I think its borax you can add to the soil
to remedy this, but after all the discussions about bug killing I'm not sure
if I have that right. Please, somebody post the right stuff to use to add
boron, I am planning to plant some beets soon too and since this garden is
all subsoil (yep, the topsoil was sold off in the sixties when the property
was sold for development, a neighbor just told me this last week) I imagine
its deficient. My tilling is done, and I have a 15 by 50 ft rectangular area
for the veggies. Should I add the boron and some epsom salts to the
dolomitic limestone I am planning to put in my spreader and then run over it
lightly once more with the tiller< If so, any idea how much to use? I will
be tilling in the lime and some bagged compost and composted cow manure at
the same time, and except for fish/kelp emulsion dont have any other
amendments planned.
TIA
