Some of you may remember that there was a discussion about corn spacing about a month ago. I wanted to give everybody an update on how the new spacing worked for me. I read the Organic Gardening update that Mel wrote Feb 96 and I decided to try his corn spacing. I planted my corn 4 per sqft in mid-late Feb. I just harvested it on Sunday and I was not happy with the results. I harvested the first of 3 squares which I planted and I only got one complete corn cob. I used a dwarf corn (Hookers Sweet corn) which I didn't think would be a problem in the 4 per sqft spacing. Each plant had 2-3 cobs on them and the pollination of these was very poor. Less than half of each cob was pollinated. I re-planted in another area using a spacing of 9 in a 2x2 square which gives them a bit more spacing. If this doesn't work then I'll go to 1 per sqft which the book has listed. Keep in mind that I planted very early in the season because my location made it possible. Hope this helps those of you who are thinking about trying this spacing new method.
