Being a beginning gardener, I am not familiar with fish emulsion fertilizer.
I assume that it is available at local nurseries or garden centers.  Or is
this something that is better ordered from a catalog?  I have not fertilized
my garden with anything yet.  Any comments on using something like
Miracle-Gro? (I know it's probably not organic)

Well, there's good fish emulsion and not so good.  I used to use "Alaska"
brand
and found it quite strong smelling.  I'm suspect of their formula now, I
think
they use pretty rotted fish scraps and may add chemicals to augment
their
nutrient levels.  Now I mostly use "Healthy Harvest," which is prepared
organically (no chemical additives) using fresh north atlantic fish and it is
much better smelling, having almost no appreciable aroma when fresh
(certainly
not unpleasant at least).  Healthy Harvest fish emulsion was written
about
this past year in Organic Gardening Magazine with very favourable
reviews.  An
alternative is wettable fish powder, which may or may not smell strongly
depending on the brand.  I've used "Mermaid Wettable Fish Powder" and
found it
to be pretty good, both odor-wise and nutrient-wise.  It's price is
comparable
to the H.H. liquid fish emulsion.
