Greetings! Your subsequent letter replying to another message mentioned
that the above tomato variety was a Heirloom variety from Koanga Nursery.
You may be interested to know that nursery is a Permaculture nursery set
up by a lady by the name of Kaye Baxter who spent several years travelling
around the older settlements in the top half of New Zealand's North
Island looking for old varieties of vegetables that had been propagated
since the days of the early settlers. These settlers had come not only
from Britain but also from Europe and in particular the Dalmatian
countries. She also visited old abandoned gardens and collected bud
wood from many old fruit trees and has been very successful in propagating
them as well.
New Zealand doesn't have much in the way of indigenous vegetables
about from the KumiKumi which the native Maori population grew. This is
like a cross between a Marrow and a Pumpkin and can be eaten small and
young like a courguette or left to mature when it develops a very hard
skin. We do have a lot of very interesting native trees, shrubs and
perennial (that spelling doesn't look right - but it's late at night and
my brain is on a go slow) foliage plants.
We ourselves grow mainly the common old favourites - peas, beans,
tomatoes, carrots, sweet corn, broccolli, etc. etc. and about two acres
of strawberries, all on raised beds. Most of the commercial seed supplies
are imported from overseas by about three seed companies and we don't have
anywhere near the selection you do in America. I must contact the New
Zealand customs people and see if there are any restrictions on importing
any particular types of vegetable seed as I would love to trial some of
the different varieties you have in your country.
Regards, Noel.
