In a message dated 97-05-21 13:25:09 EDT, you write: << I'm trying red plastic too--hope it works! I tried cantelopes in a 4x4 bed and they grew fine--till rats got them! Lisa >> Lisa: Did you try rat traps? If you planted some hills with a plant or two that you are willing to sacrifice and then replant your real crop about 2 wks later, you should be able to put a lot of rat traps in there and make serious inroads on the vermin by the time the second crop is at the stage they would attack it. Another idea is to put the melos, when still little, in loose bags of some material that will make it difficult for them to get too- if its a real small cultivar like Minnestoa Midget, you could even insert the little baby melons still attached to the vine into old gallon milk cartons or three litre soda bottles and let them grow in there, then just cut the carton open to harvest. I never thought of this before, but this milk carton idea might be great for trellised fruit too, because it would be a lot eastier to tie the handles of the carton to the trellis than to mess with making slings, which always cause problems for me. Just some ideas, Good Luck, hope they help.
