Hello to Gardening

Several years ago I purchased Mel's square foot book. This year, having
some time off, and squarely in the middle (or end I hope) of a mid-life
crisis, I dug the book out. I spent hours digging and building up a raised
bed. I live in Phoenix and have very rocky soil. However, after reading
the archives, I began dismantling my creation, as I had used pressed siding,
which appears to be a no-no... (arsenic?? in the boards?). Rather then
spend more money on some other type of siding, I dug deeper. This was about
6 weeks ago, when we experienced a heat wave here (90+), and my seeds were
no-shows and my transplants did nothing. I decided to test the soil, with
the ph being 8+. I applied sulfur. Growth started. Went on vacation, and
watered deeply before leaving. Growth took off. Lessons learned?

* Test Soil
* Water Deeply
* Don't spend entire day watching plants

This last fact is speeding my search for a job. I spend hours each checking
my single square foot....;-)

Having never gardened before, I don't know how fast these things should be
growing, how many pests constitue a "problem", how much to water, etc...
But, I'm having a blast, and just wanted everyone to know how much I
appreciate this resource.
