Hi Colin
I also have had trouble getting carrots to germinate and then bugs would
eat the tiny seedlings when they did come up. This year I made paper pots
about 1.5 inches in diameter and 5 inched deep. I planted each pot with
two seeds and placed on heat mat under a plastic dome to retain moisture.
I got nearly 100% germination and I planted these pots out about a couple
of weeks after germination. I removed the paper from the bottom of the pot
and dug a flat bottomed hole and set the pots in the hole 16 per sq. ft.
and carefully filled in around the pots. I also carefully remover the top
inch or so of the pot so that none of the paper was above ground. If any
portion of the paper pot is above ground it tends to wick the water from
the soil in the pot. I did this with 16 pots as an experiment. All are
doing well and the carrots are now about a half inch in dia.
