fennel

I don't know about normal fennel, but Bronze Fennel is a food source for
swallowtails? Some butterfly types, anyhow. One rose grower routinely plants
fennel around her roses to encourage the butterflies to put their cocoons in
the fennel. Said when the catepillars hatch out they'll devour the fennel
rather than the flowers. If you have it growing, just leave it alone if you
don't want to harvest it. (I dislike the anise taste, too, unless it's
slathered in butter and put on the grill!)
