Tracie,
       I've always heard the reason they're called "straw" berries is
because they were grown on a bed of straw (a mulch, assume).
Don't think mulching would hurt them but since the fruit is so delicate,
perhaps straw is the lighter choice and wouldn't damage any "burried"
berries with its weight.  I'm sure other sqfooters will have responses to
help you decide what to do.
