Stink bugs are MUCH bigger than a gnat!  The mature adults run about 1 to
1-1/2 inches long.  The nymphs are very small--a little bigger than a gnat.
But, they are pale orange, not bi-color, if memory serves me or if they
haven't mutated while moving north.  I've seen the bug you've described on
my southern tomatoes, and it's a beneficial insect.  Not all bugs are bad,
so don't automatically go into the kill mode.  Assassin bugs look very much
like stink bugs, and their nymphs are black and orange.  These good guys are
predators and kill other insects, including aphids, gnats and whiteflies.
