hydrangeas are generally pruned back after they flower in the summer. 
they are dormant during the winter, even in warm winter areas.  you can
also leave the blooms on and they will dry out on the bush.  i think it
makes for a rather nice fall display.  either way, i wouldn't think now,
before the hydrangea flowers would be a good time to prune.  let us know
if rooting it this way works!  if so, i'll have to try it.
