Vertical Melons

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Hi everyone,

I haven't grown melons on the ground or vertically, but plan
to do so vertically and am excited about it. After reading
Chapter 8 "Vertical Growing" in Mel's Square Foot Gardening
book in which he describes growing melons vertically (along
with a photograph on page 113 of melons grown that way), it
really piqued my interest.

I'm waiting to harvest some squares of spring veggies and
will plant the cantaloupe soon. A friend gave me some
"Tennessee Muskmelon" seeds and after reading that they can
grow to 12" in length and weigh between 12-16 lbs(!), I
decided that my pvc and twine trellis wouldn't handle that!
So I exchanged the seeds with another friend who has a very
large garden space, for a smaller cantaloupe seed from the
local coop...Hale's Best Cantaloupe. I will most likely use
pantyhose for slings to support.

I'm surprised more people on this list do not grow them
vertically since Mel so strongly suggests it. Do they know
something he doesn't know?

Oh yea and thanks to everyone for the posts on the tomato
pruning question I had. I'm still waiting for the new issue
of OG to learn more.

P.S. Frank, you should win the award for wittiest poet. I
always LOL when I read you sign offs!

Best regards and happy gardening,
Lisa
