Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
A riddle is a round screen, with sides from 2-6 inches high, and the screen
itself on the bottom, so that it holds materials to be screened and you
shake it, to convince the fines to go through ....
Check out from your local library the excellent Easy Composting, Ortho,
1992, Jeff Ball & Robert Kourik, ISBN 0-89721-243-6, which has the best
photography of any of the composting books, and turn to page 92, where you
will see a riddle in action.
Look at the posture of the man using it, and you will see why chiropractors
would like this way of sifting, if done for more than small amounts of
time....:-)
With the compost riddle sitting squarely and securely on a trash can, the
weight is fully supported and you can use the can as a lever to move the
material back and forth.
It is a good idea to fill the hopper only partway, up to about 2/3 full, so
the stuff has room to move without spilling; it is also a good idea to empty
the trash can every two or three hoppersfull, as this makes it easier to
sift, and a full can is hard to lift!
Frank---hoping he has solved the riddle of the riddle, hey diddle diddle!
:-)
