Erica Cathers said,

I'm just trying to have them grow up into a >square tomato cage, in a
"tomato automator" contraption. My variety is Jenny Lind, which is supposed
to have a >number of smallish melons rather than a few large ones. So I was
going to just let them grow as they pleased. >I'd be willing to prune one,
though, and compare notes with you over the season. Please keep us posted

I note that Erica's e-mail return address is to jersey.net. If that's the
U.S. state of New Jersey, she may have better luck with 'Jenny Lind' than I
have had in Maryland. I don't think Miss Jenny cottons to our muggy, hot
summers much.
Jenny is glowingly recommended in the Taylor's Guide to Heirloom Vegetables
and labeled a prolific bearer there, but my seed-grown Jenny vine produced
ONE melon, undersized and rotten, last year. It finally (late September)
got as big as a softball, but then I found the bottom wrecked.
The plant was in a raised bed, receiving appropriate water and fertilizer,
in full sun from 11 a.m. onward.
I am intrigued by the idea of growing melons vertically, though. Do y'all
plan to use the pantyhose trick to support each fruit?
If the "Ed" whom Erica was addressing is Ed Flynn, who's not far from me,
maybe he will check back in with comments on melons in Maryland. I'm not a
big cantaloupe fan, but it would be nice to avoid those supermarket prices
when my husband has a lope Jones working.
