The bush peas are climbing all over and tangling up in each other
and anything they can grab on to! Including my poor bedraggled,
bug-eaten "bush" beans (which aren't strong enough to even hold
themselves up!)
"bush" peas. HA! I won't treat them, nor the bush beans like
bushes anymore. They'll have to go in the back row from now on
and be trained on trellises!
I finally broke down and set up a string "trellis" for them today.
Took me half an hour just to untangle them! Poor things.
They're in the 3rd row (4th row is at the north end) and the
cucumbers right behind them are only 2" high (I had to start them
over because I'm fighting with earwigs). I'm worried the peas will
block the sun from them. <crossing my fingers>
Note to self: don't put elephant garlic in the front row anymore.
They grow at least 2 1/2" high. Put them in the 3rd row, and the
lettuce in the first row!
Question #1: some of the bush peas' leaves are half-white.
Fungus? Disease? Sunburn? Bugs? (the earwigs seem to be
leaving them severely alone THANK GOODNESS)
Question #2: can you *see* green lacewing larvae when they
hatch? I bought some mail-order, and sprinkled them around my
4x4, cherry tree, and other containers Thursday evening. I don't
see anything moving around. I couldn't tell what was rice hulls and
what were eggs--I just hoped they were in there somewhere.
Question #3: Way back in my childhood, I seem to remember
pulling carrots when the top of the carrots showed through the dirt.
I planted Short N Sweet carrots that were sheared off to the ground
several times by the earwigs (until I heard about the very effective
oil & soy sauce cat food can traps). They're about 6-8" high now.
Is my memory correct? Do I wait until they poke up through the
dirt?
Ending on a positive note: 4 pea pods harvested! YAY!!!!!!! hey I'm
thrilled I got anything at all considering that this is my first ever
garden!
