Re: PETA, Peppers and Soil Preparation

Re PETA: Melissa, please let this person know this is NOT a SQFt
topic--if recipes related to gardening are irrelevant, hunting sure
isn't!

Re Peppers: Actually, Judy, I had a bumper crop, and I think we live in
the same area--metro D.C. I had "Big Bertha", "Purple Beauty", "Golden
Summer" (I think that's its name) and my annual surefire "Early
Thickset". The plants produced most of the summer and up to a cool
spell a few weeks ago. I still have a fridge drawer full of peppers.
One thing that I did may have really helped-- I seem to
recall I had a bumper crop the last time I did this, several years ago.
I fertilized the plants with seaweed emulsion supplemented with molasses
(the supermarket kind) and nonfat dry milk!
An ORGANIC GARDENING article about peppers a few years ago suggested
this-- molasses for
phosphorus and milk for calcium, both vital to peppers. I also grew
them on red plastic and this seemed to help both peppers and
tomatoes--though it didn't do much for weeds!

Soil Preparation: I would rather not till next spring--in fact I'd like
to stop tilling totally. One fall I put soil ammendments in, covered
the beds with straw, and was able to start planting much earlier in the
spring. I'd like to do the same this year--my husband wants to till
first, though with all the rain I don't think he'll be able to.
My question to all of you is, what would you suggest I add that is soil
beneficial and CHEAP? I added composted manure, green sand, lime and
gypsum in the spring. The soil is clay and in fairly good shape, but
next year I intend to really make it produce my produce!

Thanks!

P.S. Has anyone used any computer programs for garden planning? If so,
any that are worth the money?
