I usually try for open pollinated varieties of my annual vegetables, but
this year just went with what the feedstore carried. Put out Carnival,
or some other offshoot of "Celebrity' which flopped miserably. The only
nice sized fruits I got were pulled when green and allowed to ripen on
the windowsill. All the rest catfaced and turned to mush before I could
get them to ripen fully.
MERCED, tho a hybrid was well worth the effort. It came on and produced
tennisball sized fruit and as long as I shoveled the composted manure
and straw around it and kept it moist, it kept on making fruit. It's
STILL producing golf ball sized tomatoes! My question is now that we've
had some light frosts, can I whack off the topgrowth or other healthy
plant parts and root them somewhere for next season? Or should I just
let it die naturally and begin again next year?
The compost question:
yes, all the leaves and grass clippings are what start most compost
piles off good. I like to water mine in thoroughly and put a black
plastic bag over the top to start it heating up quicker. If I had
Oleander, Azalea or other Rhododendron, I probably would avoid them in
the compost, but almost everything else can be used. (In any ratio you
can get them).
One Fig: I planted fig seedlings this year and one produced 2 figs in ?
Aug/Sept? They never turned gray/black/brown like the figs I'm used to
so I never picked them. I examined one and found it to be loose from
the tree (yesterday, Nov 8!) Picked it and opened it up to find the
insides a luscious ripe RED. Are there varieties that don't turn brown
when ripe?
What kind do I have? I like them if so because they don't have an 'open
eye', and won't attract wasps, if so.
