Hello SqFter's- I have a report on Mel's Reception and Seminar, in
Bermuda, from Lois Forbes who has Square Foot Gardened for many years. Lois
and her husband Keith are the editors, publishers and webmasters for the
most comprehensive website on Bermuda, at http://www.bermuda-online.com. She
can be contacted by email at lforbes@ibl.bm. Thank you for your report.
>I am pleased to give this report on a successful seminar held at
>Aberfeldy Nursery in Paget, Bermuda on Saturday November 8, 1997. More
>than fifty people gathered in and around the gazebo in the nursery
>grounds. Many were teachers who are keen to see Mel's program of square
>foot gardening implemented in the schools. In preparation for the
>seminar Mel was constructing a 3'x3' box that will be donated to one of
>the schools and that he would use for his demonstration. He enlisted the
>help of a young schoolboy and an older gentleman to mark off the
>squares. The boy quickly took up the challenge and had a well thought
>out plan. Others joined in and as they say "many hands made light work."
>
>Mel explained how square foot gardening is especially invaluable to
>Bermuda gardening. Bermuda is a small island of only 22 square miles. We
>have no lakes or rivers and are highly dependent on rainfall which is
>captured from our whitewashed roofs and stored in underground water
>tanks. There is little topsoil covering mostly limestone rock.
>
>In the schools the children will learn not only how to grow vegetables
>and flowers, but the square foot system will also teach them to work
>together, and the value of compromise as they share a square foot.
>
>On Friday, November 14, Mel will hold a hands-on workshop for the
>teachers to "train the trainers" at our new high school Cedarbridge
>Academy. Follow-up help will be provided by the Learning through
>Landscaping program that has already been set up in our school system.
>Mel has spoken to one of the leading Lions Club officers. There are
>seven Lions or Lioness Clubs on the island. He has been asked to speak
>next week at a joint meeting when a regional officer from New York will
>be in attendance. It is hoped that these clubs will adopt a program for
>building boxes for the schools.
>
>On Saturday, November 22, he will speak at a joint meeting of the
>Bermuda Botanical Society and Garden Club of Bermuda.
>
>Mel has been recognized on our streets and in stores and restaurants.
>Many of our participants bought books or video tapes. Others had
>recently bought the book and were especially delighted to meet the
>author and have him personally sign it. Mel is truly a friend to Bermuda
>and we are glad to have him back.
As I get more information I shall let you know.
