Compost responses...THANKS!

Hi gang...

Each time I compose a thank you for all the responses I have a few more to
read!

Thanks to all the people who responded. I very much appreciate the knowledge.

A few of the comments got me thinking...

I recently had about 15 acres of my land plowed. The two guys who were doing
the work kept saying "Wow, this is the darkest, richest looking soil I've
ever seen. You could grow a good crop in this field." The soil is very good.
Folks in the area who worked on the farm before I bought it said it yielded
some of the best peppers, tomatoes and onions they'd ever seen.

My intent is to do my first SQFT garden this spring. Would it make more
sense to take some of the rich, dark soil from that field and use it for my
beds than to mess with a compost pile?

If I'm making it too difficult messing with a compost pile why not use earth
that mother earth prepared for me...

Comments on which might be the 'better' way to do it?
