The undesirable substance produced by black walnut trees (and a few
others) is juglone
but, according to Ohio State and Maryland University extension service
bulletins, it
breaks down quickly when exposed to water, air and bacteria. It takes
two to four weeks
in a compost pile to break down and up to two months in the soil.
In other words, feel free to compost the leaves.
The bulletins also include lists of plants that are affected and those
that are not by
juglone.
