Only if you let MS Outlook and/or MS IE run VB (visual basic) programs
automatically. People who don't let their email software pretend to be
HTML and VB programs don't have to worry about getting viruses from
email. Set your email software to plain text only, don't let it
automatically run any programs or launch any other applications (such as
automatically opening a Word .doc file) and you won't have to worry about
getting a virus by "reading your email".
To repeat: There is NO WAY you can get a virus just by reading a plain
text email! You can only get a virus by running a program! If you let
your computer automatically run ANY file or program when it is displaying
your email you can, and probably eventually will, get hit by a virus or
worm. When reading email your computer should ONLY be displaying plain
text files for you to read. If your computer does anything else (displays
HTMLized "pretty text" or launches any helper applications to display other
files or run other programs) then you are going to regret it sooner or
later. Virus protection software can't protect you against the newest
viruses that haven't yet been added to your software database, and there
will always be new viruses.
