Winter Garden

Here along the Coastal Bend of South Texas, we are planting our fall and
winter crops. It's still hot by northern standards (90 during day and 68 at
night), but this passes for fall here, and we are relived that the intense
heat is gone. Now if the billions of mosquitoes that 12 inches of rain last
week brought would leave, I'd be a happy gardener.
I have planted since Sept 15., Truimphe de Farcy haricot vert beans, yellow
crookneck squash, white pattypan squash, Sugar Snap peas and an heirloom
pole bean from New Zealand, King George. The one eggplant left over from
spring is still producing prodigously, as are the habanero, Tepin and
jalapeno peppers. At the end of Oct., I will start seeding lettuces,
radishes, carrots and transplanting broccoli, cabbage and cauliflowers.
Forgot to mention that on Sept 10 I set out four Carnival hybrid tomato
plants. They are doing well and should provide fresh tomatoes from Nov. 1
to Christmas.
