I am new to the list, live in Oklahoma and we have LOTS of Borers! Anyway, I tried something new this year for the borer and it worked so thought I would let you know. As I said, I am new so I don't know if this has been posted before I prefer not to use any Chemicals and have gone totally chemical free with quite good success. My neighbor just says to plant enough for the citters and enough for you. Good Idea! Anyway, when I planted the squash (which I trail up) and the Cukes, melon, etc. I cut the bottom out of an old one gallon plastic pot that I got at the nursery, slip that over the plants as soon as they come up or the transplant as I set it out. I keep the lower vines off for probably 8-12 ", wrap the vines up 6-8" with old remay and no borer! Seems like a lot but I just hate going out suddenly and having vines dead or dying - mine never seem to recover. Hope this helps or at least gives you something to think about and maybe start planning for next year - I am! Also, I have Guinea Hens and they take care of the ants! We have fire ants in this country although I have never seen them - great Pest Patrolers, those Guineas!
