amy-
if this will be your first time gardening, i'd recommend buying a few
starts of all the solenacea plants (tomatoes, eggplants, peppers (not
potatoes though)) that you'd like to grow. they are easy to manage once
they are about 8" tall, but it's alot of work getting them to that point
and it *can* be frustrating. so buy a few (or beg a few from experienced,
friendly gardening neighbors!) and then if you wish to try a few seeds as
well, you've got insurance of a reasonable crop (assuming you can beat the
bugs, wilt, blight etc... :) )
my philosophy towards beginning gardening is to make it as much fun and as
little work as possible so you can see why so many people love it so much.
then add to the chore list as the seasons go by slowly so you can master
each new skill. that's also why mel recommends first time gardeners start
with just one square their first season. it's easy and amusing and
incorporates very little frustration!!!
