Re: Amy's tomato-starting query

A further thought on Amy's tomato query .... If you have the space, do
not plant your tomatos, peppers and egg plant (they are related to each
other) in the same place each year.
Map out your garden on paper and keep a record of where you plant
things from year to year. Diseases build up in the soil, but many will
dissipate if you rotate the location of your crops.
New gardeners are strongly tempted to overplant, but,if your space is
limited, it might be worth while to plant fewer tomatoes, etc the first
year so as to leave space to plant them in a new location the next.
Ideally I would choose to replant the same area with tomatos only every
4th year. I know this sounds drastic ... overly cautious ... but I can't
tell you how many people show up at our plant clinic each year with
their soil so contaminated from not having rotated their plants that
they end up growing tomatoes in fresh soil in containers as the only
reasonable solution.
Good luck........ Ed Flynn
