Tomatos from seedlings

The local newspaper early last spring, (really early), did an interview
with a local COMMERCIAL tomato grower, that is big time in this area.

The farmer suggested using seedlings at least 8" tall but no more then
12". Dig a trench and plant the entire plant sideways in your little
trench. Cover leaving only the growing tip in the air. The plant will
form roots all along the stalk, plus the roots are near the surface so
the sun can warm them better and for longer. The growing tip will
turn it's self upright and grow.

I am pleased to report that I tried this on five plants, two of which were
romas. We are a family of 5.

WE WERE INUNDATED with tomatoes this year, especially so with the romas,
and I have never seen such thick stalks. They grew so tall and thick and
heavy that I will have to seriously redesign my stakeing method.

We gave away to happy freinds and family alot of surplus and we still
managed to put away several bags of stewwed tomatos for the winter.

The extra roots and the sun warming really seemed to promote healthy
happy and GREAT growing plants. During the flowering I routinenly flicked
flowers nearly daily, and oh boy what a harvest.

I highly recommend trying this in your garden next year.

Now the great harvest may have at least partially been due to a good
year in the area, however from the size of the plants I doubt it.

I hope it works as well for you.

Now if I can only keep my crooknect squash alive next year.
