We had some pumpkins come up from seed in our compost last year.  They
weren't bothering anything so we let them grow.  They grew up the fence
which surrounds the garden.  Several of the pumpkins grew and developed on
the fence and were very good.  They did not have the flat spots or
discoloration which occurred on the ones on the ground.  These were not
extremely large pumpkins but were large enough to get about 2 pies from
each.

I grew my Baby Bear pumpkins on a trellis this year. I can't tell you
if they need any support or not, though, as we didn't have any way to
water the garden and they suffered badly. Only got a couple of little
ones. I'll try them again next year.
