3/4 pound carrot in Pointe Claire Clay! (wuz Re: Soil Amendments)

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Hi Square Footers!

This year I took advantage of some scrap 2 x 10s that a neighbor was
discarding, and build myself a Mel-style raised bed for the kids to garden
in (kids and raised beds are a natural combo, like pets and raised
beds...tells 'em both where *not* to walk)

We took a mix of 1/3 clay soil, 1/3 peat moss and 1/3 wormy compost, and
placed it on top of four inches of improved clay garden soil. Everything
from radishes to cucumbers to carrots grew excellently well and one Kurota
carrot weighed in at 3/4 of a pound.

So there is one success story using only compost and peat moss mixed into
the (very heavy, but fertile) clay...

I'd like to have a photo for you, but the subject was eaten before
photographers arrived on the scene...:-) (It was delicious)
