You can also use wetted newspaper over the grass before you put the dirt
in. Most places use soy inks now, so it's not harmful to the soil. This
will eventually break down, and it gives the worms something to eat. I
haven't had any luck using plastic--it kept breaking off into clumps after
a year or so, and blowing all over the yard, getting stuck on the garden
fork, etc.
