I used plastic over the grass, prior to putting in the dirt.. In
fact, I used the bags the dirt came in as the plastic.. This
worked great... I had no root problems (meaning the roots got
deep enough.. My beds were made from 8" wide boards..

I lived in Pt St Lucie, Florida and used straight cow manure..
Grew the best garden I had ever had in Florida...
