Re: slug problem?

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

For a serious slug problem like I have (or maybe had), the only "Magic
Remedy" I can vouch for is Iron Phosphate based slug bait. I am pleased this
year to be using "Escar-go", an organic slug bait. The active ingredient is
iron phosphate. The inert ingredients are recognized as grass by the FDA. It
works well and does not harm pets or wildlife. I got it through the Gardens
Alive ! catalog (http://www.gardens-alive.com/)using a $20 off coupon they
had. A much cheaper (about 1/3 the cost) source of a iron phosphate based
slug bait is Harmony Farms (http://www.harmonyfarm.com/ )but you have to buy
a minimum of 25 lbs of Sluggo Snail and slug bait. Split an order with
friends !

I garden organically and did not make the decision to use slug bait lightly.
I have copper tape on all my raised beds, have tried beer traps and even
spent a couple of springs and autumns handpicking (literally) hundreds of
slugs a night. The bait has made a huge difference that all these others
techniques did not, hence my characterization of it as a magic remedy. If
the slugs were less of a problem , I might just do periodic handpicking.
