Re: Colder weather

Hi D

Yes, it should do. As far as I know any fruit will do. It has to be ripe,
that's all. All ripe fruit gives off ethylene which then makes other fruit
ripen up too. I don't understand the biochemistry of this. Does anyone on
the list have an explanation?
What I want to know is; how does the first one start? ;)

Are they still on the vine? If so they may have had excess watering after
the skin had "set". If they are outdoor tomatoes and it rains heavily after
the skins on the green tomatoes set, they often split. Some varieties are
more prone than others to this. Gardeners Delight, a cherry type tomato
available here in the UK is very prone to splitting after rain. Many of
mine have done precisely that. Very irritating! GD's are my little treat
and self-administered reward for being a good boy and doing the watering
etc.
Very few GD's get past the allotment gates. Well, that's not strictly true,
they get past the gates, but inside me rather than the vegetable basket. :)

Best wishes
Stephen
