My exact reaction when I reached for the 5-gallon bucket
of water that I had warming up and waiting (as recommended
by Mel) and found a dead rat floating in it. Apparently it
had climbed in to get a drink of water, then couldn't get
back up the slick sides of the bucket. (The bucket was about
three-quarters full of water.)
I haven't had to nerve to keep a bucket filled with water
since. But, hmmm, you might want to experiment with a bucket
of water for a makeshift rat trap.
