Margie, I saved your instructions before on using the
camera. I have followed your instructions but I seem to have trouble with the
focus. I have looked through all the menus and cannot find any setting that
says "sharpness".Can you expand on that detail? My camera is a Sony DSC P10
Cybershot so I realize it may not have the same settings.
I get some very good scenic pictures, but close-ups are
not sharp even using the macro setting. I think it is my methods and not the
camera. I could get very close with the Mavica (within inches) but I think the
recommended 18" is going to be mandatory with the Cybershot then I have to do a
lot of cropping to get the close-up I want. If I had the time I would go back to
my old Pentax K1000 with the macro filters. I got some super pictures from that
one.
Thank you for your help. I will keep working til I
get it figured out.

Pearl -
Here are a few tips I learned.
1.) Digital zooming deteriorates the picture
quality.) So....... it's best not to zoom in, or if you do, only slightly.
2.) I find the best photos are
taken when I use a higher Image size/resolution ( like 1280x960 or
even higher). It does take up more space on the memory stick and the
size is quite large, but it's worth the clarity. Investing in a larger memory
stick is definitely worth the investment.
3.) Using the Sharpness Level option in
conjunction with the higher resolution - - makes for great computer photos,
reproduced photos on photo paper, as well as poster size print-outs.
4.) Rarely do I use the focus and AE
options, but when I do - - that can make a difference in the photo as
well.
5.) Later, on the computer I can cut away the
excess, without cutting away the size of the desired subject or reducing the
quality of the photo. If I do reduce the total size of the photo it's
still better quality than beginning with a lower resolution/Image size -
like 640x480. The program I use to help with cropping etc. is Paint
Shop Pro 7.
6.) Photo quality IS compromised a
little though when compressed for displaying the photo on Iris-Photos, so
expect some deterioration.
I
hope these hints help.
Margie
P.S.
The Carl Zeiss MTF lens does a top notch
job reproducing the subject for clarity and contrast. (I don't
know if yours came with one or not. The older models of Sony Cyber Shots
did.) Many cameras also have a built in microphone - so you can record the
names of the iris (or whatever) as you take the photo. (that comes
in handy)

Hi Margie, I suspect I have a lot of misnamed irises.
I bought several "collections" when I first moved here about 12 years ago
and so far few have been the correct iris. Still I have some very pretty
imposters and I don't do any hybridizing so I'm not unhappy. Thanks for the
kind words about the pictures. These were taken with a Sony Mavica 83
digital camera. I got a new Sony cybershot for Christmas and so far I'm not
as pleased with it. I hope I learn, or it gets easier before iris
season.

Hi Pearl,
That's a very nice picture of Lenten
Prayer. Your iris was well framed, well done! I hope you post
more. :-) (alas.............. I have my suspicions that
the Ruffled Ballet you have - may be misnamed. I have received
mis-named iris too - it is always so
disappointing. However, even that photo
was pretty - well framed too!

This is my picture of Lenten
Prayer (Shcreiner 98). I really like this one
because it bloomed after everything else had quit and extended my
season. It was an extra in my Schreiner's order, a very nice
surprise.
