I reuse my zinc markers too but I peel off the old label.  If you try hard enough (and have long fingernails) you can get under a corner of the label and it will peel right off.  Then a quick cleaning with a cloth to get off dust,  and a new one will stick just fine.  I use the clear tapes with black print so I can't just put a new label over an old one.  Your way works fine for black on white.  I just like the looks of the black on clear better.  It doesn't stand out as much in the garden.

I also type a string of labels at a time.  I keep a small notebook by my labeler and just jot down what I need to print.  When I get a bunch, I type them in.  Sure saves on tape.

The only problem I have had is that a label will peel off (or partway off) if it is applied to a dirty (dusty) tag.  I use the Zinc markers and I do reuse them.  I clean them off and make sure that they are completely dry.  Then I apply a new label right over an old one.  I try to make sure the new label is longer that the old one. 
 
In order not to waste tape space I type a string of labels.  I do not put any spaces between the info for one label and the next one.  (I space within the same label.)  Then I cut right between the letters of the two labels.  I do not need to have 1/2 inch of blank tape before and after the iris name and info.

We have  a Brother p-Touch and use TZ tape to label our plants. Ours have been out in the hot Australian sun for 3 years and not a sign of fading.

All of the information regarding the Brother Label makers is wonderful. It would also be helpful if model nos. could be indicated and also what part of the country they are being used in. I am in California where usually the sun shines from about May 15th thru October 15th. That is a lot of exposure for thermal labels. I used a lesser smaller Brother label maker once and the labels barely lasted one season. It may be that I did not use the correct label which I notice seems to be TZ. Can anyone give more information about this kind of label? Thank you for your answers.

I use a Brother label maker that does not attach to a PC, just a hand
held device. It only cost $30 and uses the TZ labels that are for
indoor/outdoor use. I use the black print on clear labels on zinc
markers. My labels are over two years old and still look like the day
they were printed.

I like the fact that the label maker is portable. I keep it with my
plant supplies in the garage and can print out a label as soon as I get
the plant and am ready to plant it.

This label maker prints on tapes from 1/4 to 3/8" wide and also does
underline, italics, outline, etc and can print on 1, 2 or 3 lines. I
don't need anything fancier than that.
