names
Elm you seem to know a great deal about iris names. Can you tell me if
there are two iris called Pass the Wine? I have an iris by that name and
received a picture from a lady in south america that is identical to mine.
They are a bronze self with a bright orange beard. But I have seen an iris
called Pass the Wine in more than one website and catalogue that is distintly
different, being rose s. with darker rose falls. I thought it would be
impossible to have two irises named the same thing but as you pointed out,
maybe it's not. Thanks for any information you might have. pearl

Bill,
The
change to Joseph's Coat Katkamier to be "PC" has nothing to do with its
having a biblical name. There was a wild Louisiana iris introduced
with the same name some years back. That can be confusing to
hybridizers when they come across an iris' parentage with one of the parents
being listed as Joseph's Coat. It leads one to wonder which iris is
that parent. A recent problem occurred with aril hybrids. There
were 2 irises known as Bronze Beauty. Barr had originally used the
name for a TB in 1884, which appeared in the 1939 AIS Checklist. So
now we have a regelia hybrid that is now PC.....it is now called Bronze
Beauty VanTubergen (VanTubergen in Holland being the originator of the
regelia hybrid). It just helps avoid confusion.
