I haven't heard of brevicalis in Ontario. On the BONAP site they had
a number of references, I checked them all, and all were secondary
reports. So I went looking further, trying to find an original report
. So far all I have found is secondary reports. On the Ministry of
Ontario list of plants I did find it. But that was the dead end. In
this report they also list I. ensata, I. germanica, I. pallida, I.
prismatica, I. pumila and I. siberica, so not a reliable report of
'native' species.. Other reports on brevicalis also show that it
isn't in Michigan, and make mention that there had been earlier
reports, that they had followed up on, with negative results.. So if
not in Michigan, but in Ontario, it would be most unusual.
So if there are any original references , and anyone has them, could
you let me know.
I have read several surveys of plants 'native' to Ontario, and I.
brevicalis hasn't shown up on any of them.
I have explored Pele Island, and did find a couple of small patches of
virginica and many more larger patches of versicolor.

That is in fact the range of brevicaulis, taken from BONAP. They don't
break down Canadian distribution lower than province, but brevicaulis
occurs on Pelee Island and Point Pelee in Lake Erie. The dark green
merely indicates presence in a state or province; light green indicates
the finer-level distribution.

Looks like I. missouriensis. Their map of distribution doesn't make
any sense. Lower part would possible cover brevicalis, buy Canadian
part makes no sense. There is no iris with that distribution.

I may have asked this question before, but I find myself staring at
these pictures again and wondering what it is...

It's being sold as Iris brevicaulis, but I wonder if it's I.
missouriensis or I. virginica or something else? It's surely not I.
brevicaulis.
