to making these fertile would be to produce amphidiploids or
amphipolyploids. It actually might be quite possible to mix and
match traits of Crested and Bearded Iris. Can you think of a better
way to get cold and/or damp tolerance into an Aril Iris? And, can
you imagine the bizzar flowers that might be possible? Whole new
classes could be invented. Well, now I'm dreaming.........
David,
First of all, nice job, shedding light on the ploidy issues.
And I'm hoping to do exactly what you mention in the excerpt above. I
have several 'Paltec' plants and a few plants of my own
crested/bearded hybrid, which I'd like to convert to amphidiploidy,
directly. I'm going to play around with trifluralin on them, this
season. As an easier (maybe) alternative, I thought that maybe by
cross-pollinating numerous flowers of the two infertile plants I
could occassionally get a non-reduced ovule together with a non-
reduced pollen. This should produce an amphidiploid also.
I dream also of the possibilities that a fertile crested/bearded
group of irises would open up. In addition to the cold and/or damp
tolerance that you mentioned, I would add shade tolerance. And along
the lines of your imagining bizarre new classes -- think what the
cresting trait could become, in combination with the various space
age types of bearded irises.
Keep on dreaming, I say.
Looking forward to the future, Tom
