RE: Iris sintenisii

Dear Jim,

I've seen in nature various populations of I. collina in different places and different conditions.
I guess I've seen it in at least 5 different places very distant each other.

Only in the Mount Pollino National Park I've found plants in total dormancy (the leaves were dry and brown, no doubt about it!).
Those plants were no dead, they simply grew in full sun on an arid and rocky soil. I think this is the reason and I've done an experiment in cultivation: the plant I leaved without water in the summer has been loosing the most of the leaves, but some plants I watered were in perfect shape.

All other plants I seen in nature are evergreen but in the summer the plants loose many leaves and the survivors are visibly "tired".
Those plants I found in shade to mid shade in woody areas. But don't be forgotten that south Italy is a dry and warm area in the summer, and the plants were not found near rivers or bogs.....
So, this species can keep green leaves during the summer but it doesn't mean they are not in dormancy.

About the taxonomical position of this species I'm trying to find some confirmations and I hope to provide some scientific studies about chromosomal count and cariotype of the two species.

I hope I've been clear, sorry for my english.
fil.

This really surprises me! The I. sintenisii I grow is
evergreen. If it loses it's leaves it's dead. What do you
mean by 'dormant'. Maybe this is due to its being ssp
or separate sp collinia. It did take me years to get a
sintenisii that matched the sp description. It is happily
growing in shade with only morning sun.
