It is generally agreed that I. plicata is a synonym of I. pallida. I
have heard it suggested that 'Swertii' is the original I. plicata
clone, but there are other old plicata I. pallida cultivars that might be
it. I would guess that odds are it is impossible to be sure which cultivar
was the original plant, nor if it is still being growing. Regardless,
there are quite a number of I. pallida plicatas, and I would think that the
genetics of most of them are quite similar.
Here is a link to the Curtis Botanical Magazine print of Iris
plicata. I looked up Redoute's too, and it is a purple I. pallida, and
does not match I. plicata at all (looks a lot like 'Floridor' to me). I
think there might be an "I. plicata" Redoute print under another name, but I
don't remember for sure. Some of the interpretive text that goes with the
Curtis (Edwards is the artist) illustration at the following link is ridiculous,
so ignore things like "Orange-flowered-scented flag" and "I. aphylla".
I have another Curtis print in my computer as "Swertii", but I can't
find it under that name in the CBM database. Didn't take time to go
through them all till I found it, so I've just attached a poor jpeg of it.
It may have been "Plicata" too, but I'm not sure. Edwards did more than
one of several of the same name, and the first published were (almost?)
always the best. The later ones always look more hurried and
less detailed.
All the following, I'm nearly positive, are pure I. pallida plicatas,
but I don't know if this is of any help. Except for 'Fairy', they all look
fairly similar. The only one I haven't grown is 'Damozel', but it seems
pretty positive to be I. pallida from photos I've seen.
Damozel
Fairy (pattern not well developed)
Little Freak (usually with six falls and no standards, but otherwise a
standard I. pallida plicata)
Ma Mie
Madame Chereau
Parisiana
Pocahontas
Rheinfels
Swertii
True Charm
True Delight
There are a few others I suspect are I. pallida, but I haven't grown them
to flowering yet. Among them are Florentine and Grapette.
