Was thinking about that phrase from the Curtis database applied to I. plicata - "Orange-flowered-scented flag" - I kept thinking color, and that indeed seemed "ridiculous", but if one thinks about the scent of orange flowers, it makes more sense.  However, to me I. pallida flowers smell more like grape juice.  Never did understand the link to I. aphylla of the name I. plicata, but I've never researched it either.
