In a previous post, I mentioned two possible
tectorum/bearded hybrid seedlings -- Iris tectorum
alba X (pallida 'Kupari' X variegata), and Iris
(cengialtii X pallida) X tectorum. The first one is
the more vigorous one and is now 9 or 10 inches tall.
I just noticed today that this one has a small amount
of purple pigment brushed on the leaf bases (where it
encircles the rhizome). The foliage is pleated like
its seed parent, Iris tectorum alba, but is more
elongated, straight and narrow than typical tectorum.
I'm most excited about the purple based foliage (PBF)
though, even if it's minor, because I've never seen
any PBF at all in Iris tectorum. So, it leads me to
believe that the intended cross actually happened --
not a stray contamination/pollination. I'm gonna be
really impatient waiting for this one to bloom!! I'll
be crossing my fingers that something weird will
happen and it'll bloom in 2006. But, at the rate it's
growing it should definitely bloom in 2007.
So... has anyone ever seen any PBF on any clones of
Iris tectorum?? Or is this the good sign that I think
it is??
