The vast majority of irises want sun. The bulbous species are mostly spring growers that only have leaves for a few months and need to soak up all the sun they can before they go dormant for the summer. They also generally want a dry summer dormancy, which full sun will help with in our climate. Among wetland species, Iris brevicaulis frequently occurs in shade in its natural habitat, but it just spreads vegetatively and won't flower well without more sun.
